Follow Me:

Tom Hurndall

It’s a busy week working on our new recording – a song about Tom Hurndall. A couple of years after I first moved to Manchester, I was in town and heard what sounded like a protest. So I followed the voices and there was a student demonstration coming down Oxford Road into the City Centre. As I stood watching, trying to make out what it was about, someone gave me this leaflet.

That’s how I found out about Tom Hurndall and also Rachel Corrie. I’d been away in Turkey around the time he was killed and somehow missed it in the news. Since then I wanted to write a song about the whole situation in Palestine but so much has been written and so many tears have been shed, it’s hard to know where to start. It was literally years later when I heard singer Aynur Doğan sing a Kurdish lament (ağıt) and suddenly I knew how I wanted to write the song. Our song has mainly English lyrics and a Kurdish lament weaving in and out of the verses. There are no sneak previews of the recording yet but the lyrics are below..

Tom Hurndall was a student in Manchester when he went to Palestine as a human rights observer in April 2003.He was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier when he tried to move some children out of the way of the gunfire. An excellent documentary called “The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall” was made by Channel 4 and broadcast in 2008. Tom’s parents were quoted as saying”They shot our son but they can’t kill his spirit” and I think this sums up what our song really is about.

    Tom Hurndall

A young boy with a dream
To show the world for real
    A photographic plea
    To make the people see

    (Kurdish – my son)

He’s about to face up to the future
He’s about to face his time
And I know that he wanted to change things
    To love the hate away

    He’s about to lay down
    But he won’t stay down

    He’s about to lay down
    But he won’t stay down

Cos time will tell, oh time will tell
    oh time will tell
Time will tell, oh time will tell
    oh time will tell

    (Kurdish– my son, my light)

    Hey soldier with a gun
    There’s children in the sun
You’re about to blaze your trail of fire
    They’re too powerless to run
So why did you have to take them, take them all away

    He’s about to lay down
    But he won’t stay down
    He’s about to lay down
    But he won’t stay down
Cos time will tell, oh time will tell oh time will tell
Cos time will tell, oh time will tell oh time will tell

(Kurdish– my son, my light, my sun, you are alone)

    You play by twisted rules
    When money protects the cruel
But I know it won’t be for ever
    It won’t stay that way

You teach the lies in school
    But not everyone is fooled
Cos time will tell, oh time will tell oh time will tell
Cos time will tell, oh time will tell oh time will tell

(Kurdish – my son, my light, my sun, you are alone, you are my heart, my heart)

    Time will tell
    Time will tell..
