    Gotin û Muzîk: Aram Tîgran

Words and Music by Aram Tîgran (the song is in Kurdish Kurmanji)

Aram Tigran was an Armenian singer and songwriter who was born in Syria. He sang in Kurdish, Armenian, Turkish, Greek and Arabic. I have loved Aram Tigram’s music ever since first coming across one of his albums by total chance,  in a Turkish  music shop in London. I was learning to play the cümbüş at the time and was drawn to the picture of Aram on the cover holding the instrument. He was a great songwriter and despite the fact that his parents fled Ottoman Anatolia during the horrific massacres of Armenians around 1915, his message was not one of hatred but one of tolerance. He was known by many as “the people’s nightingale”. His parents were Armenians who had lived in Diyarbakır in Turkey and for that reason it was his dying wish to be buried there. The wish was not granted by the Turkish government despite the efforts of the local council, who promised they would take some of the soil of Diyarbakır to put on his grave in Belgium. He died in 2009 and was buried in Brussels.

    Ay Dil

Ay dil, ay dil, dilo lo
Te digot çi min digot wilo lo
    Wext derbas bû weka do
    Heya ez heliyam lo

Ay dil, ay dil, dilê geş
    Te dît gellek tiştê xweş
Te yek dikir sed û şeş
    Xera kir kezeba reş

Ay dil, ay dil, dilo lo
Te digot çi min digot wilo lo
    Wext derbas bû weka do
    Heya ez heliyam lo

    Ay dil, dilê xortanî
    Gelek tiştê xweş dianî
Min digot qey tû bi zimanî
    Lê kurmancî nizanî

Ay dil, ay dil, dilo lo
Te digot çi min digot wilo lo
    Wext derbas bû weka do
    Heya ez heliyam lo
